How do you find a serpentine belt routing diagram? ›

Vehicle manufacturers produce serpentine belt diagrams that are designed to aid with this task. Some vehicles have the serpentine belt diagram located on a decal somewhere in the engine compartment.

Today, most vehicles employ just a single belt - the serpentine belt - to do the job.

If the belt is wobbling back and forth or the pulley is not spinning straight and wobbling, the pulley may be misaligned, which can cause the belt to squeal. Also, check if the belt is running in the center of the pulley and is not running off to the side.

As an example, “8PK2515” is the PK number found on an OEM serpentine belt. The first digit indicates an eight-rib belt, followed by “P” to identify metric belt sizing, and a “K” showing that this belt conforms to the SAE standard for rib sizing (3.56 millimeters wide for automotive-type serpentine belts).

There are two ways to align pulleys: Traditional and laser. Traditional alignment methods are quick but often inaccurate. With these methods, mechanical tools such as straightedges, tape measures, wire, string, feeler gauges, spirit levels and calibrated cones are used.

It has rubber ribbing that is equally spaced apart to time when the engine intake and exhaust valves to open and close. In contrast, the serpentine belt is a long snake-like belt that transports power to many accessories and sits outside of the engine.

What Happens if the Serpentine Belt is Too Tight. Excessive Wear: A serpentine belt that is too tight can cause excessive wear on the belt and other components, leading to premature failure. The added tension can cause the rubber on the belt to wear down more quickly, which can cause the belt to crack or break.

Replacing the serpentine belt is as simple as threading it into position, cranking the tensioner and slipping the belt over the tensioner pulley, or nearest pulley up top. Belt tensioners are mostly spring tension. Once installed, the spring retains pressure to the belt.

Engine Overheating

Overheating can cause severe engine damage, including warped cylinder heads, cracked engine blocks, and blown head gaskets. This is one of the most serious risks of driving with a broken serpentine belt - more on that later.

If the belt is already out of place, locate the driver's manual or the under-the-hood placard, where you'll find a sketch of the routing.

The tensioner pulley is responsible for keeping the belt tense while making sure it stays aligned the entire time you're driving. While the location of the tensioner pulley can vary depending on the vehicle, you can usually find it at the end of the tensioner, which is typically connected to the accessory drive belt.

What Is the Ribbed Belt Profile and Number of Ribs? Ribbed belts have lengthwise grooves on the inside. Measure the pitch of the groove, i.e. distance between projections, e.g. 3.54 mm = belt type PK. Count the number of grooves, i.e. the number of projections - e.g. 7, as shown in the picture.
