Peanuts don't have the nutrition of meat United Press International BOSTON Large quantities of raw peanuts cannot compensate for the lack of meat in a vegetarian's diet because their full food value cannot be absorbed by the human system, doctors have reported. Fate, essential to a well-balanced diet, are not absorbed into the system from raw peanuts as well as they are from peanut butter or peanut oil, according to a study published in this week's New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Allen Levine of the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis said people who excrete the fat are losing it as an energy source because the average person requires about 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of fat per day.

"If you're a vegetarian and you're eating highfiber diets, and you're also eating peanuts and peanut butter as a source of calories, you're going to excrete more fat. And then, in turn, that means you're excreting more calories," Levine said. Poor absorption of fat is not necessarily bad for the average person, Levine said, but peanuts "can supply fat and protein to vegetarians who do not consume eggs or dairy products."
