Every Red Dead Redemption 2 Character Who Gets Out Alive (2024)

As players no doubt know from both Red Dead Redemption games, the Outlaw life is not a good one. It would often take a toll on personal relationships, seen in the kidnapping of the Marston family and the loss of Arthur Morgan’s son, Isaac. The events of Red Dead Redemption 2 would haunt several characters for years, and directly or otherwise, impact their death.

With the two games spanning decades and, specifically, four years, it’s interesting to see how the life of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang caught up to them. Some were directly, dying during the events of Red Dead Redemption 2, while others paid the price for their crimes years later.

The most interesting aspect will be those who got out of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang alive and, ultimately, not impacted by its events years later. These are the characters who earned true redemption, but many of them were also never considered outlaws to begin with. Before looking at who gets out alive in Red Dead Redemption 2, it’s worth honoring those who didn’t.

  • Arthur Morgan – Will die either by Micah’s hand (if Arthur Morgan has low honor) or claimed by his TB (if Arthur Morgan has high honor)
  • Bill Williamson – Shot by John or Abraham Reyes in Nuevo Paraiso (as John had to hunt down former members of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang)
  • Dutch Van Der Linde – Falls to his death (as John had to hunt down former members of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang)
  • Hosea Matthews – Killed by Agent Andrew Milton during the Saint Denis Bank Robbery
  • Javier Escuella – killed by John or, if captured, executed by the US government (as John had to hunt down former members of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang)
  • John Marston – Killed by the Pinkertons as “The Last Enemy to Be Destroyed,” paying the ultimate price for the gang and his past crimes.
  • Karen Jones – She doesn’t die immediately from the actions of the gang, but the misfortune, death, and falling apart leads Karen Jones to alcoholism, to which she is implied to have died from.
  • Kieran Duffy – Violently killed and decapitated by the O’Driscoll’s, a rival gang of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang
  • Lenny Summers – Killed during the Saint Denis Bank Robbery
  • Leopold Strauss – After being exiled from the gang by Arthur, who realizes Leopold’s ways of getting money conflict with the gang’s ideals, he is captured by the Pinkertons and dies in custody.
  • Micah Bell – Killed by Dutch and John
  • Molly O’Shea – Killed by fellow gang member Susan Grimshaw after she claims to have been the Pinkerton’s Rat, but as it turns out, it was Red Dead Redemption 2's Micah all along, something Dutch chose to be blind to.
  • Sean MacGuire – A Red Dead Redemption 2 gang member who scraps with death several times, his end comes in Rhodes when Bill Williamson and Micah Bell lead him and Arthur Morgan into an ambush by the Gray family.
  • Susan Grimshaw – After Micah is revealed to be the real rat, Susan pulls her gun on him, but becomes distracted by the incoming Pinkertons. In her confusion, Micah shoots her.
  • Uncle – Uncle dies in trying to defend the Marston ranch when the Bureau/Pinkerton/US Army, trying to ensure that Jack and Abigail escape the final fate of the gang. He sacrifices himself, much like John Marston.

Red Dead Redemption 2: Every Dutch Van Der Linde Gang Member Who Got Out Alive

If there’s anything common about the surviving characters, it’s that they held believes in something other than the Dutch Van Der Linde gang. Many clung to the original ideals and didn’t lose themselves along the way—not just to Dutch himself— while others had faith in family, themselves, or something more religious in nature. Truth be told, the fact that 9 members of the 24 survive the events is quite surprising.

  • Abigail Marston – Abigail, Jack’s mother and John’s wife, dies a few years after John. However, as far as the story reveals, it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the Dutch Van Der Linde gang life. Her death, however, gives Jack Marston the freedom to pursue his revenge against Edgar Ross.
  • Charles Smith – Charles leaves and is believed to have escaped to Canada and started a family. If anyone embodied the Dutch Van Der Linde gang code, it was Charles. He was a good man and a modern-day Robin Hood, what the gang aspired but ultimately failed to be.
  • Jack Marston – In “Remember My Family,” Jack Marston kills Edgar Ross to avenge his father. On the knowledge his mother didn’t really die to the Bureau, though, Family here likely means the gang life he was robbed of long ago too. Jack was the golden child, beloved by everyone as proven by the Assault on Braithwaite Manor. Jack survives, at least as far as the story goes, as the last one embodying the core of the Dutch Van Der Linde gang’s motto: family.
  • Josiah Trelawny – After an emotional moment with Arthur Morgan as the gang falls apart, Trelawny leaves. Trelawny embraced the chaotic nature of Red Dead Redemption 2, much like the Strange Man, but it seems he found normalcy. It is believed he returned to his family and stayed, something Arthur couldn’t do and something John tried to do.
  • Mary-Beth Gaskill – When Dutch’s behavior becomes too erratic, Mary-Beth leaves alongside Mr. Pearson and Uncle, with the first two getting out in the long run and Uncle paying for his time in the gang years later. She becomes a published writer by 1907, though with a pseudonym to protect her identity. Her genuine care and overall clinging to the gang’s motto to help those who need it, something many members of the gang moved away from, seem to be her saving grace.
  • Mr. Pearson – Pearson becomes a shopkeep in Rhodes, somehow managing to live it all behind if still remembering his family in the Dutch Van Der Linde gang.
  • Reverend Swanson – As the gang begins to fall apart, Swanson leaves, moves to New York, and becomes the minister of the First Congregational Church of New York. It seems his saving grace from the gang is his religious faith.
  • Sadie Adler – After the Marston wedding, it is implied Sadie leaves for South America and perhaps continues her bounty hunter career there. Her survival, as well as beloved character, is one reason why players want Sadie to be the protagonist in Red Dead Redemption 3.
  • Tilly Jackson – Tilly marries a lawyer and gets to enjoy a real family life in Saint Denis.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
