Back when I was about 10 years old I got into heavy metal through a friend's good taste and my dad's wide collection of heavy metal music. It was all Iron Maiden from then on for probably a year - if not more. It was all I listened too and Dave Murray became my number one guitar player. My absolute hero. I totally worshipped the dude - I copied his clothing and his guitarplaying as well as any 10 year old could possibly do.

Helloween is pretty much the band that you can credit for starting the power metal subgenre. Their debut effort, however, was pure speed metal. They didn't stay in this style as long as Blind Guardian, for example, but their debut is very different than what you might come to expect from them if you know their modern material only. "Walls of Jericho" is a good start for Helloween, but there's one huge looming problem over it for me personally. That problem is Kai Hansen. I think Kai Hansen is a beyond awful singer. That is also the reason why you'll never see me review a Gamma Ray album either. His voice is just a piercing shrill for the entire album. Although he definitely hits some impressive high notes, and while I find his singing better on this album than it is when he eventually takes over fronting Gamma Ray, it's still just an annoying shriek with no sense of melody more often than not.
