Today we hosted 40 individuals working with NDSU Extension, North Dakota NRCS and SCDs at the NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center for an in-service training focused on the use of technology in grazing systems. We also spent some time brushing up on plant identification. Thank you to everyone that helped make today a success!

Today cow calf pairs started grazing on our virtual fence trial at NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center. One of the primary goals of this study is to utilize grazing to improve wildlife habitat. We are also looking at potential benefits to calf performance through creep grazing.

Today heifers went out on rye at NDSU Central Grasslands Research Extension Center. It’s nice to have our first group of animals out grazing. Following grazing we will evaluate livestock performance and soil health. We are evaluating two grazing treatments (spring; fall+spring), ungrazed rye and no rye. We will also compare heifer performance to those in a dry lot.

I can’t think of a better way to start the week than spending time in nature with my boys! The crocus are out in full force at Buffalo River State Park.

The things we do for research. Our crew spent 4 hours raking and pitching residue from 1 bale to measure waste and intake on our North Dakota Soybean Council bale grazing project. Thankful for a great group of students that knows how to work hard and have fun!

A week ago I had the pleasure of passing my NDSU Agriculture Core Values Award to Rachel Vollmer Wald, NDSU Extension agent in McHenry County (NDSU Extension- McHenry County). Rachel's leadership and communication has been instrumental in strengthening Extension programming at both the local and state level. As a co-leader of the Livestock Team, Rachel was critical in initiating and facilitating monthly meetings with professional development opportunities for Extension agents across the state.

Today our team led a forages focused lab for the Introduction to Animal Sciences class. We talked about types of forages, forage sampling, dry matter and grazing systems. NDSU Animal Sciences graduate students Joshua Wianecki and Jamie Chambers did a great job leading portions of the lab!
