Here is an air fryer owners dreamcome true. These are my crispy onion rings that are completely gluten free andwill have you begging for more.

I should start by saying that I have always had and always will have an onion rings addiction. I have always loved them.

It started as a nice side to have when you went out for burger and chips, then I became addicted to them at KFC and it has gone on from there.

I remember having them in KFC asa child with some fries and coleslaw. Though this was more because my parentsloved KFC and when you were a vegetarian there in the 80’s that was where thefood choice started and ended! There was no such thing as a veggie burger then ????

Well a couple of days ago we wereat our local burger bar having a meal. I had a burger meal deal with some onionrings, along with fries and a drink. Plus, it wouldn’t be a burger bar withoutfinishing the meal with a sundae.

Then a couple of days later we had an idea for making some healthy onion rings. Onion rings that I could cook in the air fryer and I wouldn’t feel guilty about.

The air fryer homemade onion rings tasted AMAZING and I no longer need to feel guilty when I want an onion rings binge. Even BETTER the rest of my family don’t like onion rings, so they are all MINE.

Can You Air Fry OnionRings?

YES YES YES! Can I shout from the roof tops and say how amazing the air fryer is for cooking delicious onion rings?

You can follow this onion rings recipe right now for healthy onion rings or follow my other recipe for air fryer frozen onion rings.

The air fryer was meant forcooking food that you would normally deep fry and even with a light batter theair fryer can do such a good job you will wonder why you used to deep fry them.

Go homemade or frozen and justtry them once and see if air fryer onion rings are for you.

Air Fryer Onion RingsWithout Flour

One thing that you are probablytrying to get your head around, is how on earth you can cook air fryer onionrings without flour. Well YOU CAN and there is one AMAZINGproduct we use to make flourless onion rings in the air fryer.

That is Bob’s Red Mill and his gluten free oat flour.

It is an amazing product and Iuse this oat flour for any air fryer recipes that I want to make gluten free. Ihave an intolerance to gluten and always feel ill after eating it and love howlight oat flour is.

It makes your regular deep friedfood that you cook in the air fryer have a wonderful taste and texture, butwithout that heavy, too much batter feeling.

Then when you dip your freshonion into your bowls to make the onion rings batter, you have a bowl with seasonedoat flour instead of real flour.

You can buy Bobs Red Mill Oat Flour on Amazon, or alternatively on Thrive Market when you sign up for their free membership.

Air Fryer Onion RingsGluten Free

But I am sure you’re thinking, that the oat flour just covers the flour replacement so what do you do about breadcrumbs?

Well the great thing is, that in this world that caters towards people with gluten allergies, that there is a lot of alternatives.

My favourite option is to make our bread maker gluten free bread rolls and then place in the blender a bread roll (or two) and blend into breadcrumbs with your blender.

Or you can take ANY ofyour favourite gluten free bread products and blend them.

What Ingredients& Gadgets Go Into Air Fryer Onion Rings?

Recipe This | Flourless Air Fryer Onion Rings (2)

There are 5 main ingredients that go into air fryer homemadeonion rings:

I would recommend before making your air fryer onion rings that you have a good air fryer or an air fryer with a non-stick basket.

That is because there are so many cheap brands of air fryers, that are just not very good and air fryers that are not non-stick.

What I do recommend is the Philips Air Fryer XL and these air fryer accessories. They are perfect for getting you started and using in our air fryer onion rings and many other air fryer recipes of ours.

Though, in todays recipe for air fryer homemade onionrings, it is all about having a bowl system in place. That way you caneffortlessly cook your homemade onion rings without it feeling like a drawn-outtask.

For specialist ingredients in our air fryer onion rings we use Bob’s Red Mill Oat Flour and gluten free breadcrumbs.

You can make your own breadcrumbs (like we mentioned above) or purchase gluten free bread and make it into breadcrumbs.

Though if you don’t follow a gluten free diet you can useregular breadcrumbs!

Air Fryer Onion Rings Tips

  • No Oat Flour? You can also use rolled oats and place them in a blender and blend until they resemble flour. It only takes a minute or two.
  • Want A Golden Glow? To stop your onion rings from looking anaemic add a little spray of extra virgin olive oil on them as you place them in the air fryer.
  • Season. There is nothing worse than unflavoured onion rings. A minute or two is all it takes to season your bowls.
  • Three Bowls. To speed yourself up and to stay organised work on a set up of 3 bowls. One with the egg mixture, another with the oat flour and the third with your gluten free breadcrumbs. Then you simply toss the sliced onions in each.
  • Cook In Batches. Your onion rings can become stuck together and not cook properly, if you cook too many at once. Instead work in batches until you have all your homemade onion rings cooked.
  • Add Ins. If you have a favourite seasoning you can mix and match. If you want a cheesy result, why not add some grated parmesan to your breadcrumbs? Or what about some tarragon if serving your onion rings with our Air Fryer KFC Chicken.

Air Fryer OnionRings Time?

The cooking time for air fryer onion rings is JUST 6 minutes. That is because it is a very thing item you are cooking in the air fryer.

When we recipe tested our air fryer onion rings, we were surprised by just how quick they cooked!

The best temperature for airfryer onion rings is 200c/400f. That is because your goal is to have crispygolden looking onion rings. A lower temperature will result in soggy onionrings without much colour to them.

FAQs

Why are my onion rings not crispy? ›

Don't skip the frying thermometer though—it's important to make sure you're frying at the right temperature so your onion rings come out crispy, crunchy, and delicious. If the oil isn't hot enough, your onion rings can turn out soggy; too hot, and the oil can start to smoke.

Why do you soak onions before making onion rings? ›

Soaking onions in water for 15-20 minutes helps to neutralize the flavors of the onion and lessen the “bite”. It also brings out a sweet flavor and makes them a bit crunchier.

What temperature do you air fry frozen onion rings? ›

Add the frozen onion rings to the air fryer basket, without overcrowding. Air fry for 12 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, turning them over with tongs or shaking the basket at the 6 minute mark.

How do you keep onion rings crispy after frying? ›

Keep warm in the oven: Place the fried onion rings on a baking sheet lined with paper towels to absorb the excess oil. Keep the fried onion rings warm in a 200°F oven while you fry the rest of the rings. Add more oil if needed between batches.

How do you keep batter from falling off onion rings? ›

A trick for getting your breading to stick better and not fall off as much when frying is to cover the breaded onion rings with a damp paper towel for 10-15 minutes after breading while the oil heats up. This helps it get a little bit tacky and stick better so less of it falls off in the hot oil.

What is the best oil for onion rings? ›

Oil for frying: Use any neutral-flavored vegetable oil that works great for high heat to cook your crispy fried onion rings. Canola, sunflower oil, and avocado oil are just a few that work great.

Is it better to soak onions in water or vinegar? ›

You can get rid of the strong taste by soaking sliced onions in ice water for 20 to 30 minutes or by sprinkling them with an acid such as vinegar. Onions soaked in ice water will get very crisp while those sprinkled with vinegar will soften a bit, but they will lose the strong taste and become sweeter.

What is the difference between battered and breaded onion rings? ›

Breaded rings are dredged in a dry mixture of flour and seasonings. Add a liquid — like water, beer, or even eggs — to that same blend, and you create a batter. Battered rings are coated in this goopy concoction before going into the fryer.

Can you do tater tots in an air fryer? ›

Preheat your air fryer to 400° for 1 minute. Then load the basket with frozen Tater Tots and cook for 7 minutes. Shake the basket well, then continue air-frying the Tater Tots for another 5-7 minutes until they've crisped up to your liking. Allow them to cool for about 2 minutes before serving.

Do you air fry frozen or thawed? ›

According to the USDA, it's perfectly safe to cook meat straight from frozen, but it's important to note that it will take a tad bit longer than if you were cooking thawed or fresh meat. On average, it should take around one and a half times as long, so plan accordingly.

Can I cook Nathan's onion rings in air fryer? ›

I like to make Nathan's or Alexia's frozen onion rings in the air fryer because the proportions of batter to veggie are perfect, plus you don't need any extra oil to get them nice and crisp.

Why do you soak onions in milk before frying? ›

There seems to be general agreement about preparation of fried onion rings, either for home consumption or in a restaurant: the onion rings should be soaked in cold milk and/or water before frying. It crisps them up.

Why are my crispy onions soggy? ›

The first is to make sure that you aren't overcrowding the pan when frying the onion. A second reason would be that the oil is too low in temperature which results in soggy onions. Also, make sure to drain the fried rings on a paper towel to soak up any residual oil and then onto a plate.

What goes good with onion rings? ›

Spicy mayo or Outback's Bloomin' Onion sauce, yes please! A cheese-beer dip or chipotle crema also work. And let me tell you, In-N-Out sauce is a game changer. Ketchup is a classic pairing, but don't sleep on adventurous aiolis and condiments to take your rings up a notch.

Why are my onion rings soft? ›

If the oil isn't hot enough, the dough will absorb the oil, creating soggy onion rings that may fall apart. Also, for the best onion rings ever, be sure not to overcrowd the frying vessel: Give your onion rings room to move around.

Why are my onions still crunchy in sauce? ›

You need to cook them longer, higher temp before simmering or slow cook for alot longer. I sauté the very finely sliced onions on a very low heat for at least 20mins before anything else goes in the pan.

Why are my onion sets soft? ›

The signs of onion soft rot start with softness at the neck of the bulb. As the infection creeps in, the onion will appear water soaked. Then, one or more scales in the bulb will become soft and brown. If you squeeze an infected bulb, it will emit a watery, smelly substance.
