By daughter Louise and Sons Elliot, Robert and Allen. raw liver or liver extract. But Dr. Castle found that it was the vitamin B12 in the liver that made the treatment successful. Dr.

Castle retired in 1968 as Francis Weld Peabody Faculty Professor at the medical school. Dr. David G. Nathan, physicianin-chief at Children's Hospital and a former student of Dr. Castle'a, said: "He was hematology.

He was undoubtedly the greatest influence on young people entering the field anywhere in the country. He saw how things worked and didn't work in a remarkably clear way. "He also did everything himself," Dr. Nathan continued, "Including repairing the plumbing in the BCH Thorndike Lab, which was always in need of repairs. A famous Castle story concerned a brash young fellow who came into the Thorndike to start his training, went over to a sink and saw a man repairing the drain.

'Could you hurry that up? I'd like to get the brash young man said. 'Oh, yes, sir, I'll get right came the reply. It was Dr. Castle." Dr. Castle was the director of the Thorndike Memorial Laboratory at Boston City Hospital from 1948 to 1963.

Yale University awarded him an honorary degree in 1933, with a citation that read in part: "His contribution to the study of pernicious anemia has given him a wide reputation. He conceived the idea that this was a deficiency disease that might depend on the inability of the stomach to elaborate from meat substance necessary for the regeneration of blood cells. The experimental procedures by which this knowledge was gained were not only brilliant examples of ingenuity but required heroism on the part of the investigator. "For some months he ate daily large quantities of beef, which he removed from his stomach at certain intervals and 1 before they had been completely digested. By this means he helped to ascertain the cause of pernicious anemia and to contribute to its proper treatment." Dr.

Castle introduced a treatment for tropical sprue, a disease similar to pernicious anemia, and the treatment of hookworm with iron. He also studied the way red cells are destroyed in hemolytic anemia and conditions under which the spleen needs to be removed to correct the condition. Dr. Castle leaves his wife, Louise (Muller); a son, William R. of West Newbury; a daughter, Anne Morris of Falmouth; and two grandchildren.
